State mandated Inspection Regulations course as required for certification as an official Vehicle Safety Inspection Mechanic in Pennsylvania. The course conforms to the regulations of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Prerequisite: Students should understand basic auto mechanics.

Students taking these exams must have a current Safety Inspection Mechanic Certificate and a valid driver's license. Training materials are available to students free of charge by visiting PennDOT's Driver & Vehicle Services web site.

 

Visual Emissions Inspector Test - RECERT

RCTC no longer provides/proctors emissions recertification exams. Please read the instructions below.

This course covers all aspects of the Pennsylvania emissions inspection program. Register and download study materials at www.paimtraining.com .

If you fail the recertification exam two times, you can purchase a remedial training and exam package.

  • Recertification Remedial Training and Exam: $24.99
  • If you fail the remedial exam, you will be required to return to the initial certification training and exam process to remain an emissions inspector.

 

Visual Emissions Inspector Test-INITIAL-EV Gas Cap

This course covers all aspects of the Pennsylvania emissions inspection program. The new test consists of 40 questions and you will have one hour to complete the online test. Successful completers earn certification as "PA Certified Emissions Inspector."

First go to www.patrainingportal.com to register and pay for study materials and exam access. Follow the instructions below.

Northern Region Initial Emissions Certification

Mechanics will have the best experience if they follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.patrainingportal.com look for “Ready to create an account?” click on Sign Up (if you already have an account sign in with your login)
  2. Log into the site with your driver’s license number; create password, enter your address, etc., answer security questions. You will be issued a 9 digit number, be sure to write it down, you will use it to log in to the site each time.
  3. Go to General Information on the side menu, click on “Initial Emissions Inspector Certification”; read the information on Northern Region Emissions Inspector Certification
  4. After you have read the information, click on “Apply for Certifications” on the side menu – click on EV - Northern Emissions or N-EIC- VISUAL/GAS CAP ONLY (the second option); click “Submit” at bottom, then click on “Pay”. Fill in your credit card information. You will then be able to download the study materials by choosing that option on the menu.
  5. Please do not click on “take test” on the PA Training Portal when you register (this will use one of your 2 attempts)

Once you have studied and are ready to take the test call Erie County Technical School at 814-464-8672 to make an appointment, we will need your name, driver's license number and phone number. Testing takes place at Erie County Technical School and the cost is $15 which allows you two opportunities to pass the test, you can pay by check, cash or credit card.

On the day of the exam: Bring your 9 digit login number and password and answers to the security questions that you provided when you registered. You will be required to answer the security question exactly as you did upon registration. The exam consists of 40 questions, which you will have 60 minutes to complete.

 

Visual Emissions RETEST for INITIAL Certification

This test is only for those who have previously taken the visual emissions Initial Certification test and failed. Successful completers earn certification as "PA Certified Emissions Inspector."
