An introductory course in which the student learns the basics of interpreting machine drawings. Topics include line and symbol identification, interpreting one, two, and three view drawings, dimensioning and tolerancing, section and auxiliary views, machining operations including screw thread specification and representation. Shop math skills including the use of decimal, fractional and metric systems are also covered.

This course will teach participants to read, interpret, and translate design requirements in accordance with standards. The course will cover an introduction to GD&T, fundamentals and rules, form tolerances for individual features (flatness, straightness, circularity, cylindricity, orientation tolerances, datums, position and concentricity). Prerequisites include basic blueprint reading skills and sound shop math skills.

Basic Metallurgy

This course is intended to develop an understanding of what metals are, their composition and properties, and heat treatment methods used to obtain various properties. While concentrating on steel, including carbon, alloy and tool steels, information on microstructures, nonferrous metals, and methods of making shapes is given. The course also reviews procedures needed to determine chemical analysis, hardness, tensile properties, and nondestructive testing, plus identification and cures for problems including part failures.
